Chapter 21

The master bedroom turned study was a figurative and literal sanctuary for me.

No matter where I traveled, if I was there longer than a month, I would set up the space. It was a way for me to bring some normalcy and familiarity with me anywhere I went. The room always started out as a square space with a sizeable closet.

The first step in setting up the sanctuary was to install the wall hangings. Long brocade tapestries covered every wall; even if the wall included windows. The heavy fabric fell into place, each panel lined up neatly to block out any light or drafts of air. The only opening was the main doorway into the room; and even that was covered with a matching hanging on the back of the door.

The next step was to erect the bookshelves. Since the invention of quickly assembled Swedish-constructed furniture, that task had become less onerous than was in the past. Lugging around solid oak bookshelves cramped one’s style. But to me, shipping in a few boxes of lightweight material that nearly self-assembled into bookshelves was a technological advancement that bordered on miraculous.

After the bookshelves were in place it was time to add in the sitting furniture, a desk in the corner, and the books and equipment that went on the shelves.

All thing considered, it took me a single afternoon to get everything into place.

And that was just the physical stuff…

Along the walls of the room, woven into the tapestries with enchanted thread, was the framework for a powerful spell.

The wall hangings were not solely for decoration. While I found the geometric designs quite relaxing, even beautiful, the real purpose was magical in nature.

The foundation of the spell woven into the wall hangings was meant to act as a form of magical ‘sound-proofing’ for the room.

While the tapestries themselves were not ‘enchanted items’ the panels were stitched with gold and silver thread that outlined a pattern that could be invested with magic. Much like a lightbulb, these panels provided the connections and framework…a mage, or other practitioner, only needed to provide the energy to get it going.

The importance of magical ‘sound-proofing’ could not be overstated. Each panel could rebuff any external magical energies away from the room. The wall hangings filtered out ambient magic that did not originate within the boundary of the room. This elimination of ‘excess’ and external energy helped me when I was dealing with complex magic.

I had never tested the strength of the tapestries. For instance, I had never asked someone outside of the room to try and cross the boundary with a magical attack, but I suspect the wall hangings would provide a fairly sturdy defense.

That is…they would have…before my study had been ransacked.

As I crossed the threshold the first thing I noticed was that entire bookshelves were tipped over; the contents scattered across the carpeted floor.

The entire room looked like a tornado had struck. Some books were shredded into small confetti-like pieces that were then thrown into the air to settle at random.
